Parts of Pakistan-wide Kashmir were shaken by a powerful earthquake on Tuesday. The earthquake killed at least 19 people and injured 300 others. The magnitude of the quake was recorded at 5.5. The earthquake hit Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, and northern parts of Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Skardu, Kohat, Kasur, Faisalabad, Sialkot.
According to US Geological Survey records, the epicenter of the quake was near the new Mirpur area in Kashmir, Pakistan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the magnitude 8.5 earthquake was centered in a mountainous city, Jhelum, in the Punjab province, at a depth of 5 km. However, science minister Fawad Chaudhary said the magnitude of the quake was 5.5.
After the earthquake, some houses in Mirpur area collapsed. State-of-the-art and hospitals have been declared in Pak-based Kashmir hospitals. News stories were showing that many roads in the area of Mirpur were destroyed, vehicles were vandalized, and road collapsed. Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa said that an immediate rescue operation had been launched in Pakistan.
Authorities said that the dam near Mangala was safe after the earthquake. However, the Upper Jhelum canal was devastated by the earthquake and some villages were flooded.
