On Tuesday, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said on Tuesday that bank loans would be waived for all crops taken by flood-hit farmers. This will be a loan waiver for two years, 2-3 years and 49-5 years.

‘The government has decided to waive the loan of farmers in flood-affected areas of Sangli, Kolhapur and Konkan and other areas. However, the previous ordinance had stated that the loan taken for crops in the ‘Kharif 29 season’ would be waived. By amending it, the loans taken by the primary agricultural credit cooperatives nationalized banks, private, rural and district central banks for the crops damaged by the affected farmers will be forgiven. This will provide relief to the farmers who are damaged by rice, groundnut, soybeans and sugarcane crops, ”Patil explained.

Stating that the flood-affected crops are under the scheme, Patil said, “The state government will provide the amount of the loan limit to the banks after harvest. Farmers who have not taken crop loans, however, are also being compensated three times the general compensation for farmers damaged by the crop.

Confusion about ‘heavy rainfall’

In the order issued by the government on August 7 regarding the crop loan waiver, it was a condition that flooded farmers who had acquired crop loans for ‘Kharif season’ would be eligible. The order was removed and the word Kharif is omitted in the order dated August 7. However, there is uncertainty as to whether the farmers will be benefited by the rains in the amended order.
